Hundreds of Miles from Home

Cold Winds

The snowfall started last week, ceasing just in time to blanket the city streets in an envelope of white. Even on busier street corners, passersby trod in the footsteps of others, hesitant to push outside the established bounds. The untouched powder, now crisp from a few nights of numbing temperatures, crunches pleasantly underfoot just off the beaten path.

It has been an interesting term, to say the least. Japan was a whirlwind of excitement, balanced precariously upon bright city lights, sandy beaches, and the stillness of a rice field at night. A place where everybody knows your name, yet occasionally more. Life moves slow while conversations wind like smoke - simultaneously obscuring the vision, enticing the mind. Truly another world.

Snapped back from this adventure, the solidity of business as usual hits like a cold bath. There are responsibilities, consequences, and opportunities enough to lock away the reckless feelings. When there is too much to grasp, retreat to the narrow. When there is too much to see, latch on the most accessible.

Yet, do not forget that there is a world outside that comfortable norm. And it's not going anywhere.
